I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to our service. For the duration of your child’s admission in hospital, they will be able to attend our Outstanding (Ofsted, 2013-14 & 2018) school and be supported to continue their studies.
We are a UNICEF Rights Respecting School who put children’s rights and pupil voice at the heart of our provision. Our highly qualified teachers deliver a full range of subjects from Key Stage 1 to A-Level; conscientiously ensuring that each student makes accelerated progress whilst with us. It is our mission to remove any pre-existing barriers to learning, and nurture your child’s abilities and interests.
Our curriculum offer at both Springfield Hospital and St George’s Hospital is carefully balanced to offer academic challenge alongside further therapeutic and expressive subjects. This combination is carefully balanced to allow excellent academic progress whilst supporting pupils to recover, develop a positive sense of self and build resilience for the future. We work closely with clinicians to ensure that the educational approach for each child is adjusted in accordance with their medical needs.
At Springfield Hospital, as soon as your child joins the classroom they will be assigned a Lead Teacher. The Lead Teacher will be in contact with you shortly if they have not already done so. For long term pupils they will attend any meetings regarding your child’s care and education. The Lead Teacher, with permission, will be contacting your child’s home school to gather information regarding current programmes of study, schemes of work, prior attainment and any support strategies which have been of benefit. This collated information will form a personal learning plan and individualised timetable for your child.
At St George’s Hospital school age children and young people are welcome to the classroom at any point in their stay to join in any of the learning activities on offer. We aim to make this classroom as child centred, engaging and fun as possible however as a young person approaches their 4th day of admission or 8th session with us they will be assigned a lead teacher who will liaise with their home school. This means we will be able to ensure that pupils are offered tuition in the same work that their peers are studying at school.
I would like to assure you that we value and protect the confidentiality of all pupils. Please also be reassured that whilst your child is in hospital their education is our priority.
Timetables and curriculum planning can be found in the curriculum pages in the Education at HHTS.
